January proved to be a challenging month for many across the United States, marked by severe weather, destructive wildfires, and the most significant aviation tragedy since 2001.
As we step away from a month filled with heartache, it’s worth noting some noteworthy happenings in the hotel industry during January. Highlights include a significant devaluation of the Marriott Bonvoy program, the rebranding of an Andaz hotel in Mexico to Alila, and the grand opening of a Ritz-Carlton in Bangkok, Thailand’s lively capital.
Here are a few lighter stories from the hotel space to explore this weekend:
A stylish new hotel launches in Houston under Hyatt’s lifestyle brand
Hyatt’s acquisition of Standard International introduced the popular Bunkhouse Hotels to its portfolio. This January marked the opening of Bunkhouse’s latest addition, Hotel Saint Augustine, right in Houston’s Montrose Museum District. Featuring 71 vibrant rooms and suites, it also hosts a Gulf Coast-style bistro created by chef Aaron Bludorn, an impressive lobby bar, and a relaxation space. Bunkhouse’s unique flair sets it apart in the hospitality scene.
Although Bunkhouse properties aren’t yet part of the World of Hyatt rewards program, that is expected to change, allowing guests to earn and redeem points during their stays.
Exciting enhancements near Universal Studios Hollywood
For visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood, the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City remains the standout choice. This full-service hotel features a scenic walking path directly to the park, and some rooms offer stunning views of the attractions.
Recently, the Los Angeles City Council approved an expansion plan by Sun Hill Properties for the hotel. The development will add an 18-story tower with 395 new rooms, increasing the total to 890. The innovative diamond-shaped design draws inspiration from mid-century modern architecture and will include a rooftop pool. This expansion will not only enhance the experience for theme park visitors but also address the growing need for accommodations ahead of the L.A. Olympic Games in 2028. — Tarah Chieffi
