Is the Citi Strata Premier worth the annual fee?

The Citi Strata Premier® Card (see rates and fees) is Citi’s mid-tier travel credit card, designed to earn bonus points on common spending categories and offer full-value access to transfer partners.

However, with numerous alternatives available, is the Strata Premier worth its $95 annual fee? Below, we examine the key features of the card to help you determine if it’s right for you.

Welcome Offer

The Strata Premier currently provides a welcome bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 within the first three months of opening the account.

According to Flying Frugal’s September 2025 evaluations, Citi ThankYou points are valued at 1.9 cents each, making this bonus equivalent to approximately $1,140.

We suggest applying for the card when a higher welcome offer of at least 70,000 points is available to maximize your initial investment and offset the annual fee.

Before applying, check your eligibility. According to Citi:

Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new account bonus for a Citi Premier® or Citi Strata Premier® account in the past 48 months or if you converted another Citi credit card account where you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a Citi Premier® or Citi Strata Premier® account.

The card earns 10 points per dollar spent on attractions, car rentals, and hotel bookings through the Citi Travel portal.

Additionally, the Strata Premier earns 3 points per dollar spent on the following categories (with no caps or annual limits):

  • Air travel
  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • Gas stations
  • Hotels (non-Citi Travel purchases)
  • Restaurants (including takeout)
  • Supermarkets

All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent.

According to Flying Frugal credit card writer Danyal Ahmed, he frequently uses his Strata Premier card for gas and groceries, helping him quickly accumulate ThankYou points. The attraction of earning additional points on everyday purchases and the card’s strong transfer partners were key motivations for his application.

Moreover, the Strata Premier’s bonus categories apply globally, unlike some cards that restrict bonus points to US purchases.

Transfer Partners

When evaluating if the Strata Premier’s annual fee is justified, consider the airline frequent flyer programs it offers access to. Citi features valuable transfer partners like Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, with the addition of American Airlines AAdvantage being particularly noteworthy.

While no-annual-fee Citi cards can also transfer to AAdvantage, the conversion ratio is less favorable at 1:0.7. The Strata Premier offers the most cost-effective annual fee for point transfers at a 1:1 ratio, making it a solid option.

Danyal is a strong proponent of the AAdvantage program, and the ability to transfer ThankYou points to this program is a key reason for his continued investment in the annual fee.

Hotel Credit

As a cardholder, you’ll receive an annual benefit of $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) when booked through Citi Travel.

Although this benefit appears enticing, particularly for boutique or independent hotels, you may not realize the full $100 savings you expect.

Before finalizing a hotel reservation through Citi Travel, compare prices to see if you’re getting the best rate. Citi Travel may not always provide the lowest prices, meaning your $100 discount may not be as advantageous as it seems.

Moreover, bookings made via travel portals like Citi Travel generally do not earn hotel loyalty points or honor elite benefits, which should be considered when assessing the $100 discount.

Travel and Purchase Protections

The Strata Premier offers the following travel protections:

Shopping protections include:

World Elite Mastercard Benefits

As a World Elite Mastercard cardholder, you’ll enjoy additional perks such as Global Emergency Services, a $5 Lyft credit for taking at least three rides in a month (offer valid until Jan. 31, 2026), and $10 off your second Instacart order each month, along with a complimentary three-month subscription to Instacart+ (offer valid until Jan. 31, 2027).

Entertainment Perks

Citi credit cardholders, including those with the Strata Premier, have access to Citi Entertainment.

This program offers access to exclusive events and early ticket sales for concerts, film festivals, performances, and shows.

Bottom Line

Given that the hotel benefit might not yield the full $100 value, deciding whether the Strata Premier is worth its $95 annual fee depends on your ability to earn points and how you value them.

If you can effectively utilize the bonus categories and gain value from Citi’s transfer partners, the potential rewards may surpass the cost of the annual fee. However, if you’re seeking more immediate value through statement credits and other perks, you may prefer a different card, such as the more premium Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (see rates and fees).
