Flying Frugal has received feedback from readers who were unaware of the need for an International Driving Permit (IDP) when renting a car in some foreign countries, Italy being a notable example. This oversight can derail an otherwise perfectly planned vacation.

Without an IDP, car rental companies may refuse you service, forcing you to rely on public transportation, private drivers, or ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft.

Fortunately, applying for an IDP can now be done online, making the process quick and straightforward.

What is an International Driving Permit?

In essence, an IDP translates your English-language driver’s license into 10 different languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. It serves to authenticate that you possess a valid driver’s license issued in your home country, which for U.S. travelers refers to a license from a state or U.S. territory.

When driving abroad, you should carry the IDP—containing your name, driving information, and photo—alongside your valid driver’s license. The IDP is recognized in over 150 UN member countries and serves as a legitimate form of identification in more than 175 countries, providing broad coverage for international travelers.

Is an IDP required to drive in foreign countries?

Not every country mandates an IDP, but many do. Countries like Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, and Thailand require one. While Germany and Hungary do not specifically require an IDP, they do necessitate a translation of your license into their languages, so obtaining an IDP is a convenient way to comply. Always check the requirements for any country where you intend to rent or operate a vehicle.

Some car rental agencies may allow rental without an IDP, but if caught driving in a country that requires it, you may face hefty fines, and your vehicle could be impounded. Additionally, lacking an IDP during an accident might void your insurance coverage.

How to obtain an International Driving Permit

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is the sole private entity authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs.

You do not need to be a AAA member or a U.S. citizen to apply, but you must be a permanent resident of a U.S. state or territory and hold a valid driver’s license from that location. Applicants must be 18 years or older and have held their driver’s license for at least six months.

Your driver’s license must also remain valid for at least six months following the issuance of your IDP. Applications cannot be submitted if your license is suspended or revoked.

AAA offers a convenient online application process for the IDP.

Visit the AAA International Driving Permits page to start your application, and you’ll be guided through the process within the govWorks app. AAA will send you a text with a link and a QR code for easy access.

The total cost for my IDP was $42.99, composed of a $20 permit fee and a $10 fee for a “digital passport photo.”

Note that you must take your photo using the app; previous photos aren’t accepted.

Shipping fees vary based on your location and chosen method. For example, my options to the East Coast included:

  • FedEx 2 Day: $12.99
  • USPS Priority Mail: $14.99
  • USPS Express Mail: $31.20
  • FedEx Standard Overnight: $61.03

An IDP typically remains valid for a year or until your current driver’s license expires.

Once you place your order for the IDP, it will take approximately 5 business days for processing, in addition to your selected shipping time.

When to apply for the IDP

It usually takes one to two weeks for the IDP to be shipped, so it’s wise to plan ahead. You can apply for an IDP up to six months before your travel date. For instance, if you’re traveling on July 1, you could start your application as early as the previous January.

Familiarize yourself with IDP rules and driving regulations

It’s your duty to confirm that the countries you’re visiting accept the International Driving Permit.

Additionally, it’s important to review local driving laws and regulations. Some countries require a “vignette,” which is a sticker that permits you to drive. Rental cars may already be equipped with these stickers or the rental agency can direct you on where to purchase one.

Always remember to carry your driver’s license, as the IDP is merely a “permit” and not a standalone “license.” It must accompany your home-issued driver’s license to be valid.

Can you drive in another country without an IDP?

While obtaining an IDP is not the only option for driving abroad, as some destinations allow you to carry a translated license, having an IDP can save you the hassle of translation in multiple languages and ensure smoother acceptance in various regions.

Bottom line

Securing an International Driving Permit is a straightforward and cost-effective process.

Whether or not you plan to drive on your next trip abroad, arranging for an IDP can provide an additional layer of identification, complete with your details in languages authorities recognize.
