Frontier Airlines is expanding its network and is considering the introduction of inflight Wi-Fi. The Denver-based low-cost airline announced a new four-route expansion impacting six U.S. cities on Thursday.

This launch includes fresh service to Orlando from the New York City area, alongside a flight that may draw interest from one of the largest U.S. airlines.

Additionally, Frontier has revealed plans to introduce inflight Wi-Fi—a feature that would have seemed unlikely for this traditionally no-frills airline just a few years ago.

Details on Frontier’s 4-Route Expansion

First, let’s outline the new routes. This expansion consists of three brand-new routes and one returning service.

The budget airline is enhancing its offerings to warm-weather locales during the winter season.

The flights are set to commence between early January and mid-February, with launch dates approaching fast.

  • From Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO): Launching January 21 with three flights per week.
  • From MCO to Pensacola International Airport (PNS): Starting February 13 with twice-weekly service.
  • From Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Tucson International Airport (TUS): Launching January 22, operating twice a week.

Furthermore, Frontier will restart its service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and O’Hare International Airport (ORD), a route not serviced since 2022, as per Cirium schedule data.

The MIA-to-ORD service will commence on February 13, operating three times weekly. American Airlines will likely take note of this route, as it connects two of its hubs. (O’Hare is also a major hub for United Airlines.)

Inflight Wi-Fi on the Way

Recently, Frontier made waves by indicating its plans to introduce inflight Wi-Fi to its aircraft.

Historically, the airline has been internet-free, even as major competitors like Spirit Airlines have added onboard connectivity.

This month, CEO Barry Biffle responded to a social media inquiry about inflight Wi-Fi by confirming, “it’s coming.”

A spokesperson for Frontier elaborated to Flying Frugal, stating the airline aims to select a Wi-Fi partner within the upcoming year.

“Competition among potential vendors is increasing, and they are keen to collaborate with us,” the carrier mentioned.

Inflight Wi-Fi is becoming a crucial amenity for airlines. Each of the six largest U.S. carriers has either announced plans to provide free Wi-Fi or has already implemented it.

So far, Frontier has refrained from incorporating Wi-Fi, a costly addition that hasn’t aligned with its low-cost, no-frills model.

However, the airline is already breaking away from that mold, with plans to introduce first-class seating soon.
