Amex Platinum upgrade offer: Check to see if you’re eligible

Sometimes, an irresistible offer comes your way — even if it means parting with one of your favorite cards.

This happened to me not long ago while I was hunting for a great welcome deal on the newly revamped American Express Platinum Card®. I was thrilled by the card’s enhanced benefits, such as the lucrative Resy credit, improved digital entertainment credit, and extensive airport lounge access.

The welcome offer for the Amex Platinum is personalized and targeted. New cardholders might discover offers that include up to 175,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within the first six months. Remember, these offers can differ, and not everyone may qualify.

Having been a satisfied member of the American Express® Gold Card for a while, I wasn’t actively looking to upgrade.

However, when I compared my highest personalized Platinum offer (80,000 Membership Rewards points for $8,000 in spending within six months) to the upgrade offer for my Gold (125,000 points for $6,000 in spending within six months), it became evident that upgrading was the more valuable option.

Here’s why you should consider reviewing your upgrade offers if you’re in the market for a new travel card.

My Amex Platinum Welcome Offers

I had to try multiple times over several days to find an Amex Platinum offer that captured my interest.

Since Amex restricts cardholders to one bonus per card lifetime, the pressure was on to find a compelling option. I was hoping for the top-tier 175,000-point bonus but would have settled for anything over 100,000 points.

Regrettably, I encountered several unimpressive offers.

One of the more disappointing bonuses appeared when I used a preapproval tool. It offered just 50,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within six months.

While it was nice to get approved, 50,000 points felt quite underwhelming, especially given the publicly available offer on the Amex Gold Card promises new applicants up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 in the first six months. Come on, Amex!

I attempted several strategies to secure a higher Amex Platinum offer, including using incognito mode in Google Chrome, trying different browsers, and checking over multiple days. Ultimately, the best I received was 80,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within six months.

Even this was nothing special; it was merely the previous public offer from before Amex launched its personalized bonus feature in June 2025.

After days of seeking an impressive offer, I thought I’d have to give up.

Surprisingly, the best option for boosting my Membership Rewards balance was already available to me.

Check Your Amex Account

Logging into my Amex Gold account, I discovered a Platinum Card bonus that was too tempting to ignore.

The offer was right on my homepage — I just had to scroll past my recent transactions. I found a targeted upgrade offer for 125,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 within the first six months.

Jackpot!

This not only exceeded my 100,000-point goal, but it also came with a lower spending requirement — $6,000 instead of $8,000 within the same timeframe.

Did I want to bid farewell to my Amex Gold? Not particularly, but I could always reapply later (though without a welcome bonus). However, I was eager to experience Platinum Card membership, and this offer was the decisive factor.

I never intended to upgrade my Gold Card during my exploration of the Platinum bonus, but I hadn’t found anything close to 125,000 points in my previous searches.

Bottom Line

Upgrading a card in your possession won’t always yield the best bonus — and I didn’t expect it to be the most effective strategy for securing the Amex Platinum Card.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my Platinum Card membership and have already earned my substantial welcome bonus. Now, I’m dreaming about how I’ll use those 125,000 Membership Rewards points.

If you’re considering the Amex Platinum and already own an Amex card, check your account. You may just come across a surprising upgrade offer with over 100,000 points waiting for you.
