Air Canada is set to unveil a completely revamped cabin design for its newest aircraft in the near future.
On Tuesday, the Montreal-based airline revealed plans to introduce a fresh interior look in 2026, featuring innovative mood lighting, larger overhead storage, and an overall modernized ambiance.
This new design will first be implemented on the airline’s Airbus A220 jets, as announced during a press conference held by Airbus in Hamburg, Germany.
The new interiors will begin rolling out for passengers in 2026.
This refresh is not only significant for Air Canada; it also marks the introduction of Airbus’ “Airspace” cabins on the A220 model.

The Airspace cabin is recognized for its expansive designs, sophisticated lighting, and enhanced functionality, being previously adopted by numerous airlines on various aircraft types. However, this will be the first occasion that Airbus introduces the Airspace design to the A220, which has been part of Air Canada’s fleet since late 2019.
Enhanced Overhead Storage
One of the most significant upgrades for Air Canada travelers will be the expansion of overhead storage space.
The new bins will be 20% larger, capable of accommodating up to 19 additional bags. This is a welcome change on a plane that can carry up to 137 passengers.

This updated design will also allow for easier closing of the bins, which will latch at the bottom and hinge upward, as demonstrated during my tour of Airbus’ mock-up at the Aircraft Interiors Expo, a prominent industry event in Hamburg.
This will make it easier and quicker for passengers and flight attendants to secure luggage as they prepare for takeoff.
Moreover, the upgraded A220s will also provide fast, complimentary onboard Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members, along with new 4K seatback screens made by Panasonic, which I experienced last year.

A Comprehensive Refresh — for the A220 and Beyond
The updated aesthetic promises to enhance the overall experience as well. The new design has been described as “Glowing Hearted” by Air France.
“The cabin will have a warmer feel compared to previous designs, which is very intentional,” noted John Moody, Managing Director of Onboard Product, during the conference. “Our goal is to convey the warmth and caring spirit that Canadians are known for.”

This inviting atmosphere is expected to extend beyond just the A220. The design showcased with Airbus is projected to be “phased in” across other Air Canada aircraft, according to Moody.
While details remain tentative, it’s worth mentioning that the airline has a significant order for long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This new variant has inspired various airlines to implement novel styles and premium seating options, including American Airlines and Iberia.

“Consider this a preview,” said Moody regarding Air Canada’s future plans. “We have the XLRs coming and other aircraft lined up that will feature new offerings, so stay tuned.”
Conclusion
Air Canada currently operates 35 A220s across various North American routes. The new Airspace cabin is expected to debut with the arrival of the airline’s 43rd A220, with delivery anticipated in March 2026.
As of now, there are no plans to retrofit the existing A220s with this new design.
The airline’s current A220 configuration includes 12 premium recliners in business class, alongside 125 seats in the main cabin arranged in the A220’s signature 2-by-3 layout.
This announcement coincides with Air Canada cutting flights to and from the U.S. in response to a significant drop in bookings from Canadian travelers.
