Earning welcome bonuses on popular Capital One cards has become more difficult due to a new 48-month restriction affecting the entire Venture card family.
This change applies to the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card (no annual fee), the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card ($95 annual fee), and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card ($395 annual fee).
The rule effectively prevents cardholders from “downshifting” to a card with a lower annual fee after opening a new Venture card and receiving a bonus within the past 48 months.
However, Capital One still allows individuals with lower annual fee cards to apply for higher fee options, facilitating “upward” movement within the card lineup.
Here are the complete details:
New Rule for Capital One’s Venture Family
The recent policy disproportionately impacts current Venture X cardholders who have received a bonus in the last 48 months. As a result, they cannot apply for the VentureOne or Venture cards.
A Capital One representative confirmed to Flying Frugal that those denied the VentureOne or Venture may qualify for a “terms-modified version of VentureOne” without a welcome bonus.
Let’s clarify the rules for each card:
- VentureOne Applicants: You cannot apply for this card or its bonus if you’ve received the bonus from VentureOne, Venture, or Venture X in the past 48 months.
- Venture Applicants: You are ineligible for this card or its bonus if you’ve received the bonus from Venture or Venture X within the last 48 months. If you’ve only received the VentureOne bonus, you are eligible for the Venture card and bonus.
- Venture X Applicants: You cannot apply for this card or its bonus if you’ve earned the Venture X bonus in the last 48 months. If you’ve only received the bonus from Venture or VentureOne, you can apply for the Venture X card and its bonus.

Since 2023, Capital One has implemented a 48-month wait period between welcome bonuses on the same personal card, and this new rule extends that restriction to all Venture-branded cards.
Additionally, Capital One mandates a six-month waiting period between approvals for any new Capital One cards, including personal and business cards.

Final Thoughts
It has become harder to qualify for and receive bonuses on Capital One’s Venture family cards if you’ve held a Venture product and received a bonus in the last 48 months.
This change particularly affects Venture X cardholders who have earned their bonuses during this period, restricting them from applying for any other personal Venture card until the 48 months have passed.
You can still “move up” in the Venture family, starting with the VentureOne and progressing to the Venture or Venture X, or moving directly from the Venture to the Venture X. Be sure to consider all application restrictions before applying for a new card.
