Delta Air Lines is set to embrace Bluetooth technology, with plans to introduce Bluetooth connectivity on its aircraft starting in 2026. This initiative will enable passengers aboard its latest planes to connect their Apple AirPods and other wireless audio devices to the inflight entertainment systems.
The announcement was made during a keynote speech at the Las Vegas Sphere on Tuesday, part of CES, one of the world’s premier consumer electronics exhibitions.
During the presentation, Delta executives unveiled that the new Bluetooth functionality is part of a broader upgrade of the inflight entertainment system on its new aircraft, which will also feature upgraded, high-definition seatback screens and a recently announced ad-free streaming partnership with YouTube.
Meanwhile, airlines report that many passengers are opting for premium seating.
In addition, Delta disclosed a new collaboration with Uber that will launch in the spring, enabling customers to earn SkyMiles on select rides.
Delta Enhances Bluetooth Connectivity
Currently, Delta passengers can only connect their Bluetooth devices to a limited number of seatback screens, specifically in first class on its Airbus A321neo jets. This limited availability was previously part of a trial as the airline evaluated expanding the technology to more planes and cabins. Since then, the trend of utilizing seatback screens has gained momentum among airlines, and Bluetooth headphones have become increasingly popular.
Delta’s Aircraft Receiving Bluetooth
However, Delta has yet to confirm plans for widespread Bluetooth deployment across its fleet. The airline indicated that Bluetooth technology will first be installed on specific new aircraft deliveries next year. Notably, Delta plans to implement this technology on the upcoming Airbus A350-1000s and A321neos starting mid-2026, as well as on future deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX 10, pending certification.
Regardless, Bluetooth access will be available in all cabins of these aircraft, allowing passengers to connect their AirPods whether traveling in Delta One or basic economy class.
In this initiative, Delta is following the example set by United Airlines, which has committed to equipping over 800 of its planes with Bluetooth capabilities by 2032.
Delta’s Bluetooth initiative is a clear step toward enhancing the passenger experience, aligning with the growing trend of in-flight technology upgrades.
More Innovations Announced in Vegas
This announcement regarding Bluetooth capabilities came amidst a significant overhaul in Delta’s inflight entertainment offerings revealed at the Sphere presentation. Delta has consistently leveraged CES to unveil significant technological advancements, including the transition to offering complimentary inflight Wi-Fi, now available on over 700 Delta jets for SkyMiles members.
With the new Bluetooth capability, both the seatback entertainment systems to be rolled out and the partnership with YouTube will offer a premium experience for passengers, giving them access to high-quality content without interruptions. Features include:
- 4K HDR QLED screens for a cinematic viewing experience.
- Ad-free access to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music through seatback displays or personal devices connected via complimentary Wi-Fi.
- A “Do Not Disturb” feature to notify flight attendants of passenger preferences during service.
- Audio translation services for inflight announcements in various languages.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian stated, “Whether through fast, free Wi-Fi, our industry-leading seatback screens, or any of the other personalized channels in Delta’s digital ecosystem, we’re dedicated to crafting a seamless and enriching experience for our SkyMiles members.”
This “next-generation Delta Sync seatback experience” is part of a collaboration with aerospace firm Thales Avionics.
New Partnership with Uber
Additionally, Delta announced an exciting new partnership for regular Uber users among its SkyMiles members.
Launching this spring, passengers will be able to link their SkyMiles accounts with Uber, allowing them to earn miles for eligible rides and deliveries. Key details include:
- 1 mile for every dollar spent on UberX rides to and from airports.
- 2 miles for every dollar spent on premium rides.
- 3 miles for every dollar spent on Uber Reserve rides.
- 1 mile for every dollar spent on eligible restaurant and grocery orders.
More details about this collaboration are expected to be announced in the near future.
AI Enhancement in the Mobile App
As is customary in 2025 product announcements, Delta is also integrating artificial intelligence into its services. The Fly Delta mobile app will feature Delta Concierge, an AI tool designed to assist passengers with tailored guidance and suggestions throughout their travels.
The AI concierge may provide information on passport or visa needs and offer packing tips based on destination weather conditions.
This development is in line with major U.S. airlines investing in mobile app enhancements, enabling customers to track luggage, self-rebook, file lost luggage claims, and receive critical notifications through features such as “live activities.”
Delta’s focus on these hardware and software enhancements aligns with its plans for modernizing cabin interiors on new and retrofitted aircraft in the years to come. The airline celebrated its 100-year anniversary at CES, showcasing its vision for the future alongside its achievements.
