The ongoing transformation of New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has marked another significant milestone this week: the completion of the curtain walls for the new Terminal 6, effectively enclosing the structure for the first time.
This milestone paves the way for a grand opening set for January, ahead of schedule.
As one of only two media outlets granted a tour of Terminal 6, Flying Frugal witnessed firsthand how this new terminal will enhance airport infrastructure in the Northeast.
We also got a glimpse of a stunning new art installation that will welcome travelers upon arrival. Below is an illustration of this impressive mural.
The “JFK Global Panorama,” a 12,000 square foot 3D ombre artwork, showcases iconic imagery from New York City and flight routes, symbolizing global connectivity.
A Redesigned JFK Airport and New Terminal 6
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is amid a $19 billion project to revamp JFK, which will introduce several new terminals as well as improved roadways for easier access.
The same team that built the impressive Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport is also in charge of constructing Terminal 6 at JFK.
In our tour, JFK Millennium Partners informed us about Terminal 7’s eventual demolition to make way for an additional four gates in the expanded Terminal 6, expected to open in 2028.
The new terminal will span 1.2 million square feet and feature 10 new gates, with several designed for wide-body jets. The scale of the terminal can be appreciated from the newly developed central hub.

Terminal 6 will include five airline lounges and an arrivals lounge. Currently, no airline has been confirmed to host the first arrivals lounge at JFK, leaving opportunities for interested carriers.
Lufthansa plans to open a significant new lounge here, accessible via escalators. Further details are forthcoming, including features for dedicated first-class, business-class, and Senator lounges.
Cathay Pacific will also open its inaugural JFK lounge in this terminal, with exciting features expected to be announced soon.
Aer Lingus has confirmed its own dedicated lounge in Terminal 6, accessible via a staircase visible in the image above.
The passageway shown above will connect Terminal 6 to Terminal 5, home of JetBlue Airways’ hub. Once completed, passengers will be able to move seamlessly between the two terminals for shopping and lounge access.

Environmental sustainability is a key focus for the project, employing sustainably sourced materials, rooftop solar energy, and energy-efficient operational practices. JFK Millennium Partners aims to achieve LEED Silver or Gold certification for the terminal.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the revamped Terminal 6 will be a remarkable sight. With its impressive skylights, expansive Grand Hall, and cutting-edge biometric systems, it promises to redefine what an airport terminal can be.
This new development could very well position JFK as one of the top airport terminals in the country, giving LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International Airport some serious competition.
