The well-known Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas, near San Diego, is bidding farewell to guests under 18. Beginning February 14, the resort will exclusively cater to adults.
The 130-room property in Encinitas has made this transition to create a more tranquil atmosphere in this coastal haven. In a statement, the resort highlighted its commitment to enhancing “relaxation, exploration, and rejuvenation by the sea.”
While the stunning location perched above the Pacific Ocean has always been a sanctuary for relaxation, its previous family-friendly policies complicated this experience. An initial review of Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas noted that the pool was “overrun with children” and not as serene as anticipated due to the presence of families.
While it’s essential for everyone to enjoy the amenities a family-friendly resort offers, Alila’s luxury brand identity, focus on “profound experiences,” and aim to immerse guests in “rich culture and breathtaking natural surroundings” may not align with boisterous games like chicken in the pool.
With the departure of younger guests, adult visitors can now fully indulge in the resort’s wellness and relaxation offerings. They can indulge in treatments at Spa Alila, which are inspired by the region’s Indigenous Kumeyaay people, or enjoy a sauna experience along with a cold plunge right by the pool.
“As we shift to an adults-only experience, we’re thrilled to unveil new programs tailored to our adult guests’ desires for relaxation, connection, and adventure,” stated Richard Sorensen, the resort’s general manager. “From curated wellness retreats to elevated dining experiences, our aim is to foster an environment where guests can completely unwind and embrace the beauty of our oceanfront location.”

The Alila Journeys program further enhances the experience, offering guests amenities such as biking along the coast on Electra Go! bikes, viewing the coastline from an open-air biplane, learning to surf, or paddling out to explore the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve.
For a more memorable stay, guests can opt for a room featuring a fire pit, perfect for enjoying evenings around an outdoor gas fire.
Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas joins the ranks of Alila Ventana Big Sur (a top-rated resort by Flying Frugal) and Alila Napa Valley as an adults-only destination within the World of Hyatt portfolio. Later this year, the Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya in Mexico will reopen as Alila Mayakoba, becoming the first Alila property in Mexico.
