The wildfires wreaking havoc across the greater Los Angeles area are significantly affecting travelers. Many flights to and from Southern California are impacted due to the unpredictable conditions, with the Hollywood Burbank Airport experiencing the majority of cancellations and delays. Fortunately, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) reports minimal disruption to its operations.
A passenger traveling from Denver shared a video on X, showcasing an aerial view of the Palisades fire. His flight, originally scheduled to land at Burbank Airport (BUR), was diverted to LAX due to turbulence from strong winds fueling the flames.
As of 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, FlightAware data indicated that 19% of flights departing from Burbank Airport had been canceled, and 13% delayed. Additionally, LA Ontario International Airport (ONT), located about 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, reported around 10% flight cancellations.
In response to the fires, several airlines have issued travel alerts for the region, allowing affected travelers some flexibility. Airlines such as Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United Airlines are permitting customers with flights to and from LA-area airports between January 8-10 to rebook by January 15.
American Airlines has also implemented a travel waiver policy similar to the one introduced after the New Year’s terrorist attack in New Orleans.
As for the many attractions that draw visitors to Los Angeles, several have closed due to the ongoing fires. The Getty Villa, part of the renowned J. Paul Getty Museum, has fortunately avoided damage amid the destruction of over a thousand homes and buildings. However, it will remain closed at least until next week, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles will be shut until January 12.
The iconic Griffith Observatory, near the famous Hollywood sign, is also closed. Concerns linger among residents nearby about potential evacuations if the flames advance. Both Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures have temporarily closed their popular studio tours, citing “strong winds and fire conditions.”
Universal Studios Hollywood and its adjacent entertainment complex, Universal CityWalk, have also closed their doors for the time being. However, Disneyland, located about 45 minutes away in Orange County, remains open, as does Knott’s Berry Farm. Their status may change depending on fire conditions, so those planning to visit should check ahead.
