On Tuesday, United Airlines unveiled updates to its mobile app designed to enhance holiday travel for passengers.
The new “virtual gate” feature will be a relief for travelers tired of gate congestion. It provides real-time updates on boarding groups and includes a progress bar to show how many passengers have already boarded the aircraft.
For those using United Clubs, a “closest and best” feature will recommend nearby lounges based on gate proximity and capacity. Available now at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), this feature will expand to other airports throughout 2026. ORD boasts five United Club lounges and a premium Polaris Lounge.

The airline has also enhanced its baggage tracking with a new “package-delivery-style” tracker that shows the real-time location of bags throughout the journey.
Another useful addition provides personalized information for travelers, including details about wheelchair service, stroller check-in, reminders for required travel documents like passports, and information about biometric boarding options when available.

Additionally, the app now provides enhanced arrival information, including local weather updates and clear instructions for connecting to ride-hailing services at specific airports.
“The more information we offer our customers, the more at ease they feel about their trip—especially during the holidays,” stated David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer. “The United app equips travelers with personalized, real-time updates throughout their journey, making it feel like they have a personal assistant alongside them.”
