The Citi Strata℠ Card (refer to rates and fees) is a well-regarded entry card with no annual fee, making it a great starting point for those looking to engage with the Citi ThankYou Rewards program.

Paying the annual fee for the Citi Strata Premier® Card (see rates and fees) might be worthwhile if you’re looking to enhance your travel experience. This card provides elevated earning rates in essential bonus categories and better access to Citi’s airline transfer partners.

Here are some reasons to consider upgrading from the Citi Strata to the Strata Premier.

Boost Your ThankYou Rewards Points

As a no-annual-fee card, the Citi Strata offers:

  • 5 points per dollar on attractions, car rentals, and hotels booked through Citi Travel
  • 3 points per dollar on EV charging, gas stations, select transit, and supermarkets
  • 3 points per dollar on one selected category (which can be changed quarterly)
  • 2 points per dollar at restaurants

In contrast, the Strata Premier provides enhanced earning rates and different bonus categories:

  • 10 points per dollar on attractions, car rentals, and hotels booked via Citi Travel
  • 3 points per dollar on air travel, EV charging, gas, hotels (outside Citi Travel), restaurants, and supermarkets

With a stronger focus on travel, the Strata Premier maximizes earnings on key Citi Travel purchases, making it particularly appealing for frequent travelers.

Furthermore, upgrading increases restaurant earnings from 2 points per dollar to 3, which accumulates significantly over time.

Enhanced Value of Your ThankYou Points

Upgrading to the Citi Strata enhances your ability to earn ThankYou points and unlocks better redemption value.

Both cards enable transfers of ThankYou points to Citi’s 22 partners, including valuable options like American Airlines AAdvantage, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. The Strata Premier allows transfers at a 1:1 ratio with most partners.

In contrast, the Citi Strata has a transfer ratio of 1:0.7 for most partners, which is less favorable. This discrepancy is significant when considering large point transfers for sought-after business-class tickets.

With the Strata Premier, it’s possible to achieve over 1.9 cents per point (according to Flying Frugal’s September 2025 valuations). I regularly obtain between 4 and 9 cents per point when transferring to partner airlines for business-class redemptions.

Additional Benefits Worth Considering

Even with the $95 annual fee, the Strata Premier offers various benefits that enhance its value annually. Two noteworthy perks include:

  • $100 annual hotel credit: A one-time $100 credit for single-stay hotel bookings of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) made via Citi Travel.
  • World Elite Mastercard benefits: Enjoy several travel-related perks, like a $5 monthly Lyft credit after three rides in a month (offer valid until January 31, 2026), a three-month trial of Instacart+ for new subscriptions, and $10 off your second Instacart purchase each month (offer valid until January 31, 2027). Access luxury hotel and resort portfolio perks such as complimentary breakfast and room upgrades (subject to availability).

The Strata Premier, being a more premium card, provides access to Citi’s exclusive hotel collection, offering elite-like benefits when booking through Citi Travel.

As a Strata Premier cardholder, you will receive a range of travel protections:

  • Car rental insurance
  • Lost or damaged luggage protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Trip delay coverage

This comprehensive protection is superior to what the no-annual-fee Strata card provides.

Consider Direct Application Over Upgrading

If maximizing points is your goal, applying for the Strata Premier directly might be preferable to upgrading from the Citi Strata card.

New Strata Premier cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months, valued at approximately $1,140 according to Flying Frugal.

Upgrading from a Citi Strata card does not grant a welcome offer, and this bonus is also unavailable if you’ve received a new account bonus for a Citi Premier or Citi Strata Premier in the past 48 months.

Additionally, it won’t apply if you’ve converted a different Citi credit card account where you earned a new account bonus in the last 48 months into a Premier or Strata Premier card.

If you qualify for the Strata Premier’s welcome bonus, applying directly may offer better value than upgrading.

By retaining the Strata card, you can utilize both the Strata and Strata Premier together to optimize points across a broader range of categories. For instance, use the Citi Strata for select transit and self-selected category expenses, while reserving all other travel and restaurant spending for the Strata Premier.

Conclusion

The advantages and earning potential of the Strata Premier likely outweigh its annual fee, offering better long-term value compared to the Citi Strata card.

Overall, you’ll gain access to 1:1 point transfers to most partners and travel-oriented bonus categories.

Continually assess your card options to ensure you’re maximizing value, which might signal an upcoming upgrade.
