Best Credit Cards for Delta Flyers
SkyMiles have no fixed value and no transfer partners, so a Delta card has to earn its fee on mechanical benefits: bags, boarding, the companion certificate and lounge access.
Last verified August 9, 2026 — annual fees marked as verified were checked against the issuer's own pricing page. Welcome offers change frequently and are shown only where an editor has verified them in the last 24 hours.
Delta prices SkyMiles awards dynamically and does not publish an award chart, and SkyMiles cannot be transferred to other airline programs. That combination means you should never accumulate SkyMiles speculatively — earn them for a trip you can already see, or earn a transferable currency instead.
What a Delta co-brand is genuinely good for is the fixed, repeatable benefits. Those you can value precisely.
How Flying Frugal judges a card
We are a flight-deal site, so we evaluate credit cards on one question: does this card reduce the cost of travel you were going to do anyway? A card that earns a currency you cannot use, or whose benefits require spending you would not otherwise make, does not pass — no matter how large the welcome offer looks.
We do not currently have affiliate relationships with card issuers, so nothing on this page is an application link and no card is ranked because of a payout. When that changes, paid links will be labelled as advertising, and the editorial order will not move to accommodate them.
- Does the rewards currency reach airlines that actually serve your home airport?
- Are the recurring benefits ones you would use without changing your behaviour?
- Is the annual fee smaller than the fees, insurance and travel spending it displaces?
- Would you keep the card in year two, after the welcome offer is gone?
Valuing the benefits honestly
| Benefit | How to value it | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| First checked bag free | Bag fee × directions × trips per year, for each traveler on your reservation | Counting it when you travel carry-on only |
| Companion certificate | The cash fare of the trip you will actually take with it, minus taxes and fees you still pay | Valuing it at the highest fare you can imagine |
| Priority boarding | Close to zero in cash terms | Treating convenience as savings |
| Status-qualifying credit from spend | Only if it changes your tier this year | Chasing status you will not reach |
| SkyMiles earning | Cash price ÷ miles required on a real booking | Assuming a fixed cents-per-mile value |

Delta SkyMiles Platinum (Amex)
One domestic round trip for a companion, used on a route you were flying anyway, can outweigh the fee by itself. Unused, it does not.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on Delta purchases, hotels and dining, plus an annual companion certificate.
- Travel benefits
- Annual domestic companion certificate (fees and taxes payable) · First checked bag free on Delta flights · Main Cabin priority boarding · Status-qualifying credit from card spending
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The companion certificate is the entire case for this card. Used once on a real domestic round trip for two, it can outweigh the fee on its own; unused, the card is expensive for what it earns, because SkyMiles are worth what Delta says they are worth on the day and cannot be transferred elsewhere.

Provides Sky Club access when flying Delta plus Centurion Lounges, without committing your earning to SkyMiles.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on airfare booked directly and through Amex Travel; base rate elsewhere.
- Travel benefits
- Broad statement-credit package (airline, hotel and retail credits) · Hotel program elite status with participating chains · Trip delay and baggage protections · Fine Hotels + Resorts and hotel collection benefits
- Lounge access
- Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select and Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The most expensive mainstream travel card, and the one where the fee decision is purely arithmetic: total the credits you will genuinely use at face value, ignore the ones you would not have spent money on anyway, and compare that with the fee. Frequent flyers through airports with Centurion Lounges usually clear it. Occasional travelers rarely do, and the coupon-book structure means the value is not automatic.

Membership Rewards transfer to Delta when you need SkyMiles, but also to other airlines when Delta's pricing is poor — which is often.
- Rewards
- Highest earning on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, with elevated earning on flights booked directly.
- Travel benefits
- Dining and delivery statement credits · Baggage insurance · No foreign transaction fees
- Flying Frugal analysis
- An earning card, not a travel-perks card. It belongs in a wallet next to a premium card rather than instead of one: you earn Membership Rewards on the categories most households actually spend in, then redeem through airline transfer partners. If you do not cook, dine out or use the dining credits, the fee is hard to justify.

If Delta is convenient rather than essential, keep the flexibility and price each trip on its merits.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on travel and dining with a modest annual fee.
- Travel benefits
- Trip cancellation and interruption insurance · Primary rental car collision coverage · No foreign transaction fees
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The card we would hand to someone starting from zero. Same transfer partners as the Reserve at a fraction of the fee, with the travel protections that actually matter for a leisure traveler. Most people never need to upgrade past it.

When a Delta card is the wrong answer
If you are based at a Delta hub and Delta is genuinely your default, the co-brand math works and the companion certificate is the deciding benefit. Everywhere else, flexibility wins.
- You fly Delta once or twice a year — the bag benefit will not cover a mid-tier annual fee.
- You live in a competitive airport where you buy the cheapest carrier each time.
- Your goal is international premium cabins — transferable points reach programs that price those better.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I transfer points to Delta SkyMiles?
- Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Delta. SkyMiles cannot be transferred out to other airline programs, which is why we treat them as a spend-when-you-book currency rather than a savings account.
- Is the Delta companion certificate worth the annual fee?
- It can be, on a single domestic round trip you were going to take anyway, once you subtract the taxes and fees you still pay on the companion ticket. If your travel plans are uncertain, value it at zero and see whether the rest of the card still justifies the fee.
- Which Delta card gives Sky Club access?
- Access rules are set by Delta and American Express and have been tightened more than once. Confirm the current entry rules for your specific card on Delta's own Sky Club page before relying on it.
