Best Credit Cards for Business Class Travel
Business class in cash is rarely worth it. Business class on transferred points frequently is — which makes the transfer partner list, not the perks list, the thing to compare.
Last verified August 9, 2026 — annual fees marked as verified were checked against the issuer's own pricing page. Welcome offers change frequently and are shown only where an editor has verified them in the last 24 hours.
Start with the honest premise: paying cash for business class almost never survives a cost-per-hour test against economy on the same route. The reason to care about premium cabins is that award pricing sometimes lags cash pricing badly, and that gap is where points produce four-figure value.
So the card question becomes narrow. Which currency reaches the airlines that fly your route, and which of those airlines still price awards in a way you can afford?
How Flying Frugal judges a card
We are a flight-deal site, so we evaluate credit cards on one question: does this card reduce the cost of travel you were going to do anyway? A card that earns a currency you cannot use, or whose benefits require spending you would not otherwise make, does not pass — no matter how large the welcome offer looks.
We do not currently have affiliate relationships with card issuers, so nothing on this page is an application link and no card is ranked because of a payout. When that changes, paid links will be labelled as advertising, and the editorial order will not move to accommodate them.
- Does the rewards currency reach airlines that actually serve your home airport?
- Are the recurring benefits ones you would use without changing your behaviour?
- Is the annual fee smaller than the fees, insurance and travel spending it displaces?
- Would you keep the card in year two, after the welcome offer is gone?
The arithmetic that decides a redemption
Compute cents per point: (cash price of the exact same seat ÷ points required) × 100. For premium cabins, use a cash price you would genuinely have paid, not the unrestricted fare the airline publishes. If you would never have paid $6,000, do not count $6,000 of value.
| Option | Cost | Effective value | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash business class | $4,200 | — | Only if someone else is paying |
| Points award | 70,000 + $180 taxes | ≈5.7¢ per point vs the cash fare | Strong — this is the case for transferable points |
| Cash economy | $620 | — | The honest comparison: is the seat worth $3,580 to you? |
| Points on the economy fare | 35,000 + $80 | ≈1.5¢ per point | Weak — pay cash, save the points |

Chase

Chase Sapphire Reserve
Chase
Chase Sapphire Reserve
Ultimate Rewards reaches the alliance partners that price transatlantic and transpacific business class most reasonably.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on travel and dining, with a higher rate on travel booked through Chase's portal.
- Travel benefits
- Annual travel statement credit · Primary rental car collision coverage · Trip cancellation, interruption and delay protection · Emergency medical and evacuation coverage
- Lounge access
- Priority Pass Select membership plus Chase Sapphire Lounge access
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The strongest insurance package of any mainstream U.S. travel card, which is the underrated reason to hold it — primary rental coverage and trip delay protection replace products you would otherwise buy. Ultimate Rewards transfer partners are the most useful set for domestic and transatlantic award flights. The fee is now high enough that it should be treated as a premium purchase and re-justified every renewal.

American Express

American Express Platinum
American Express
American Express Platinum
Amex's transfer partners cover a different set of airlines, and the lounge access matters most on the long-haul itineraries you are booking.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on airfare booked directly and through Amex Travel; base rate elsewhere.
- Travel benefits
- Broad statement-credit package (airline, hotel and retail credits) · Hotel program elite status with participating chains · Trip delay and baggage protections · Fine Hotels + Resorts and hotel collection benefits
- Lounge access
- Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select and Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The most expensive mainstream travel card, and the one where the fee decision is purely arithmetic: total the credits you will genuinely use at face value, ignore the ones you would not have spent money on anyway, and compare that with the fee. Frequent flyers through airports with Centurion Lounges usually clear it. Occasional travelers rarely do, and the coupon-book structure means the value is not automatic.

Capital One

Capital One Venture X
Capital One
Capital One Venture X
A shorter partner list, but a materially smaller fee — enough for one or two premium redemptions a year.
- Rewards
- Flat-rate earning on everything, with higher rates on travel booked through Capital One Travel.
- Travel benefits
- Annual travel credit and anniversary miles · Trip delay and cancellation coverage · Authorised users at no additional fee
- Lounge access
- Capital One Lounges plus Priority Pass
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The simplest premium card to justify, because the recurring credits are straightforward rather than a coupon book, and adding household members does not cost extra. Its transfer partner list is shorter than Chase's or Amex's but has improved substantially. A good single-card solution for someone who does not want to optimise categories.

Chase Aeroplan Card

Chase Aeroplan Card
Distance-based pricing plus stopovers can beat dynamic award pricing on the exact routes people want business class for.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on dining, groceries and Air Canada purchases.
- Travel benefits
- Free first checked bag on Air Canada · Aeroplan status boost from card spending
- Flying Frugal analysis
- Worth knowing because Aeroplan's distance-based award pricing and generous stopover rules make it one of the better ways to book Star Alliance partners, including transatlantic premium cabins. It is also a Chase transfer partner, so many people access Aeroplan without holding this card at all.

Alaska Airlines Visa
Mileage Plan partner awards have long been one of the better values for premium cabins, and the card carries an annual companion fare.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on Alaska purchases, plus an annual companion fare benefit.
- Travel benefits
- Annual companion fare · Free checked bag on Alaska itineraries · No foreign transaction fees
- Flying Frugal analysis
- Alaska's own network is regional, but its partner award pricing has long been among the most useful for premium-cabin international redemptions, and the companion fare is a concrete annual benefit. Strongest for travelers based on the U.S. West Coast, including LAX.

Find the seat before you transfer the points
- Transfers are generally one-way and irreversible. Confirm award space is bookable, then transfer.
- Search the partner airline's own site where possible; each program prices the same seat differently.
- Two seats together in business class on a specific date is a much harder search than one seat. Build flexibility into the plan.
- Taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges vary enormously by program on the same flight — check them before choosing where to transfer.
Frequently asked questions
- How many points do I need for business class?
- It depends entirely on the program and the route, and dynamic pricing means the same seat can cost very different amounts across programs. Search the specific route in two or three programs before deciding which currency to earn.
- Is it better to earn airline miles directly?
- Usually not. Transferable points let you choose the program with the best price for that specific seat; airline miles commit you before you know what the award will cost.
- Do I need elite status to book award business class?
- No. Award availability is released by the operating airline and is generally not status-gated, though some programs give members earlier or wider access to certain inventory.
