Best Credit Cards With Transferable Points
Transferable points are the only rewards currency that lets you shop award prices across airlines. This is a comparison of the four ecosystems, not a list of perks.
Last verified August 9, 2026 — annual fees marked as verified were checked against the issuer's own pricing page. Welcome offers change frequently and are shown only where an editor has verified them in the last 24 hours.
The advantage of a transferable currency is optionality. The same trip can cost wildly different amounts in different airline programs, and transferable points let you pick after you have searched — rather than committing years in advance by earning one airline's miles.
The disadvantage is that transfers are generally one-way, irreversible, and not always instant. That single fact drives the correct workflow.
How Flying Frugal judges a card
We are a flight-deal site, so we evaluate credit cards on one question: does this card reduce the cost of travel you were going to do anyway? A card that earns a currency you cannot use, or whose benefits require spending you would not otherwise make, does not pass — no matter how large the welcome offer looks.
We do not currently have affiliate relationships with card issuers, so nothing on this page is an application link and no card is ranked because of a payout. When that changes, paid links will be labelled as advertising, and the editorial order will not move to accommodate them.
- Does the rewards currency reach airlines that actually serve your home airport?
- Are the recurring benefits ones you would use without changing your behaviour?
- Is the annual fee smaller than the fees, insurance and travel spending it displaces?
- Would you keep the card in year two, after the welcome offer is gone?
The four ecosystems at a glance
| Currency | Strongest for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Chase Ultimate Rewards | Domestic and transatlantic partner awards; the most consistently useful list | 5/24 gates access to the cards that earn it |
| Amex Membership Rewards | A partner set that reaches airlines Chase does not | Some transfers carry an excise-tax fee; frequent targeted transfer bonuses change the math |
| Capital One miles | Simplicity and a lower premium fee | Shorter partner list than Chase or Amex |
| Citi ThankYou Points | Broad earning categories; strong one-way international partners | Weaker for domestic redemptions |

Chase
Preferred
Chase Sapphire Preferred
Chase
Chase Sapphire Preferred
The most broadly useful partner list for U.S.-originating travel, at the lowest cost of entry.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning on travel and dining with a modest annual fee.
- Travel benefits
- Trip cancellation and interruption insurance · Primary rental car collision coverage · No foreign transaction fees
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The card we would hand to someone starting from zero. Same transfer partners as the Reserve at a fraction of the fee, with the travel protections that actually matter for a leisure traveler. Most people never need to upgrade past it.

American Express
Travel
American Express Gold
American Express
American Express Gold
Earns heavily on food spending, and Membership Rewards reaches a partner list that only partially overlaps Chase's.
- Rewards
- Highest earning on restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, with elevated earning on flights booked directly.
- Travel benefits
- Dining and delivery statement credits · Baggage insurance · No foreign transaction fees
- Flying Frugal analysis
- An earning card, not a travel-perks card. It belongs in a wallet next to a premium card rather than instead of one: you earn Membership Rewards on the categories most households actually spend in, then redeem through airline transfer partners. If you do not cook, dine out or use the dining credits, the fee is hard to justify.

Capital One
Travel
Capital One Venture X
Capital One
Capital One Venture X
Flat-rate earning with a partner list that has expanded substantially, at a lower premium fee.
- Rewards
- Flat-rate earning on everything, with higher rates on travel booked through Capital One Travel.
- Travel benefits
- Annual travel credit and anniversary miles · Trip delay and cancellation coverage · Authorised users at no additional fee
- Lounge access
- Capital One Lounges plus Priority Pass
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The simplest premium card to justify, because the recurring credits are straightforward rather than a coupon book, and adding household members does not cost extra. Its transfer partner list is shorter than Chase's or Amex's but has improved substantially. A good single-card solution for someone who does not want to optimise categories.

Citi
Premier
Citi Strata Premier
Citi
Citi Strata Premier
The broadest bonus categories of the four, and a partner list that is strong for one-way international awards.
- Rewards
- Elevated earning across air travel, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gas.
- Travel benefits
- Annual hotel booking credit · Broad bonus categories with no travel-portal requirement
- Flying Frugal analysis
- The most category-generous mid-fee card: it covers most of a household's spending without asking you to book through a portal. ThankYou transfer partners are strong for one-way international awards but weaker for domestic redemptions than Chase.

The workflow that avoids stranded points
Transfer bonuses are the one reason to break this rule, and even then only when you have a concrete trip in mind. A 30% bonus into a program you will never use is a 100% loss.
- Search award space first, in the specific program you intend to use.
- Confirm the seat is bookable and note the taxes and surcharges that program charges on it.
- Only then transfer the exact number of points required — never round up 'to be safe'.
- Book immediately. Award space can disappear while a transfer is pending, and there is no route back.
Frequently asked questions
- What are transferable points?
- Rewards currencies issued by a bank rather than an airline — such as Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards — that can be moved into partner airline and hotel programs, usually at a 1:1 ratio, and then redeemed for awards.
- Can I transfer points back if I change my mind?
- No. Bank-to-airline transfers are one-way and irreversible in essentially every program. Confirm award availability before transferring.
- Which transferable currency is best?
- The one whose partners fly your routes. For most U.S. travelers Chase Ultimate Rewards is the safest single choice, but if a specific airline serves your home airport, check which bank transfers to it before deciding.
